Fourth International Conference on Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies - GHGT-4 -
Interlaken, Switzerland, 30 August - 2 September, 1998
This conference continues the tradition established with the ICCDR Conference Series - The International Conferences on Carbon Dioxide Removal. The First Conference was held in March 1992 in Amsterdam and represented the first major gathering of researchers in the field of CO2 capture, disposal, and utilisation. The scope of this conference series has been expanded to include all greenhouse gases, by the incorporating of the IEA Greenhouse Gases, Mitigation Options Conference held in London in 1995. This is reflected in the change of the name of the conference: GHGT-4.
The conference will provide a forum for the latest advances in the field of Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies, including capture, disposal, and utilisation. Additionally, it strives to promote international research and development collaborations and to encourage an exchange of ideas on future directions in this field.
You are invited to submit papers on research, development, demonstration, analysis, or economics related to the following topics:
CO2 Capture
Separation and recovery techniques including absorption, adsorption, membrane separation, and cryogenic fractionation.
Integrating of CO2 recovery into power plant designs, including replacing air burning with oxygen burning and integrated coal gasification combined cycle power plants.
Capture from non-power plant sources in the industrial, transportation, or building sectors.
CO2 Disposal
Disposal of CO2 into the ocean, depleted oil and gas wells, underground aquifers, etc.
Transporting CO2 from the source to the disposal site.
CO2 Utilisation and Recycling
Opportunities for economic utilisation of captured CO2.
Large-scale utilisation of CO2, using either chemical or biological processing.
Cofiring of biomass in power plants.
Other Greenhouse Gases
Capture, minimization, utilisation, recycling and disposal of other greenhouse gases, as e.g. methane and nitrous oxide.
Implementation Issues
Current or proposed research, development, and/or demonstration projects.
Economic, environmental, and/or legal considerations.
Policy Issues
Relationship of CO2 control technologies to other mitigation options. Life-cycle and other externality analysis.

5. Internationale Konferenz Wissenschaft - Medien - Öffentlichkeit
Berlin, 17. - 19. September 1998

Training programme:
Impact Assessment for Sustainable Development: Integrating Environmental Assessment with Economic and Social Appraisal
Manchester, UK, 21 September - 11 December 1998
Introduction
The University of Manchester, Institute of Development Policy and Management (IDPM) and the EIA Centre at the University of Manchester, are offering a progressive training programme on Impact Assessment for Sustainable Development: Integrating Environmental Assessment with Economic and Social Appraisal.
Sustainable Development can only be achieved on the basis of a balanced appraisal prior to their approval and implementation, of a country's development policies, plans and programmes as well as of its major development projects. Environmental impact assessment (EIA) is a tool which is widely used to assess the environmental impacts of individual development projects. Cost-benefit analysis (CBA) and social impact assessment (SIA) are used to appraise their likely economic and social consequences. A balanced appraisal requires the integrated application of each of these three appraisal methods. The emergence of sustainable development as a major policy objective is now leading to these three methods being adapted and applied, in an integrated manner, in strategic-level appraisals of development policies, plans and programmes. This has created the need to strengthen and extend training in the combined application of these three forms of appraisal, at both project and policy and planning levels, in different types of economic system. The University of Manchester, through IDPM and the EIA Centre, has an international reputation for research and training in this area.
Participants
The programme is intended to meet the needs of those concerned with the practical integration of environmental considerations, along with economic and social factors, in the development process. It will be appropriate, therefore, for senior government agency staff, development agency personnel, private sector development staff, international consultants and regulatory authority staff, and managers in NGOs from developing and transitional economies, as well as those from advanced economies with interests in international and national sustainable development issues.
Programme Content
The course has been designed as a comprehensive 12 week programme for which a Postgraduate Certificate in Environmental Assessment and Sustainable Development will be awarded on its satisfactory completion, However, because of the programme's structure, applicants may attend the modules in project level assessment (weeks 1-4) and in strategic policy and planning assessment (weeks 6-9) separately.
