Erfurt, Thuringia, Germany, 12 - 13 November 1998

The Innovation Relay Centre for Southern Germany, in cooperation with the Thuringian Society for Biomaterials, is organising a technology transfer event in the field of biomaterials, to be held in Thuringia, Germany, on 12 and 13 November 1998. The event will follow up the 1997 BIOAPPLICA convention for technology transfer between biotechnology companies.

This year's event will focus on biomaterials, and will offer participants the opportunity to present their profiles of expertise, technology and cooperation goals in a catalogue distributed prior to the event. Individual meetings with other companies with similar interests will then be pre-arranged.

It is expected that between 70 and 100 company representatives from thematic areas covering surface modification of biomaterials, in-vitro testing and prosthetics will attend the event. This will ensure that participants have the opportunity to meet with a range of companies to seek partners for future R&D projects, solutions for technological needs and acces to new markets.

In addition, a presentation on the upcoming Fifth RTD Framework Programme and the special conditions and facilities for EU projects in the field of biomaterials will also be given, as well as the presentation of a selected number of projects.

Aus der Friedensbewegung entstanden, beschäftigt es sich mit den gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen dieser Technologie. Eine Gelegenheit dazu bieten die vom FifF jährlich veranstalteten Tagungen, auf denen es Vorträge, Diskussionen und Arbeitskreise zu vielfältigen Themen gibt.

Die Durchdringung der Gesellschaft mit Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologie in allen Lebensbereichen nimmt noch immer kontinuierlich zu. An international forum entitled "Global communications for efficient and prosperous networked communities will be held in Paris, France, on 16 and 17 November 1998. This will be the eight international meeting on the global Information Society and will be supported by the European Commission, DG X and DG XIII, in cooperation with the French Senate and the French Ministry of Industry.

The European Commissioner responsible for research and innovation, Mrs. Edith Cresson, will open the conference. The aim is to provide participants with the opportunity to meet international leaders from Europe, North America and Japan in the context of a series of discussions and demonstrations related to the emerging global information economy. The forum will also provide participants with the opportunity to make presentations and demonstrations on related subjects.

The following topics will be addressed in detail:

• The impact of the Internet economy and converging technologies in the Information Society and the response of globalisation;
• The new dynamism and the answer of international organisations;
• New Information Society policies to develop market opportunities and networked communities;

An international conference which will conclude a five-year, multi-disciplinary project on sustainability and environmental quality, coordinated by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), will be held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on 19 and 20 November 1998.

The conference will consider the results of this research in the context of similar research programmes elsewhere, in order to disseminate and discuss the findings and conclusions among a multi-disciplinary audience. The conference programme will introduce the research and its specific aims, and will include plenary sessions in its three sub-programmes:

• Sustainable household management;
• Flows and accumulations of material;
• Multinational river basin management.

Three comprehensive scenarios for sustainable development will also be presented during a plenary session covering:

• Weak sustainability, where resources and capital are mutually replaceable with piecemeal environmental problem solving;
• Maximisation of eco-efficiency and economic growth by integrated policy;
• Strong sustainability, comprising the precautionary principle, low substitution of resources by capital, low consumption of resources and lifestyle and technology changes.

Six Countries Programme on Innovation Autumn Workshop 1998

Knowledge Transfer in the Information Age

Budapest, Hungary, 19 - 20 November 1998

The Six Countries Programme (6CP) provides an international network and forum for experts and practitioners engaged in research on innovation and related public policies. It aims at a better understanding of innovation processes, their development and at assessing the impact of Science and Technology on public policies and programmes. The Programme was established in 1975. There were four countries represented at first but increased to six in 1976 and now there are ten. The name has become so well known that it has been kept, regardless of the number of countries represented.

Each year two major conferences or workshops are held on research aspects of innovation. A Six Countries Conference always has a specific theme, highlighted in formal presentations and discussions. The workshops are more informal with keynote speakers to stimulate participation in interactive discussions. A report is published for each event synthesising the presentations and discussions.

The Budapest Workshop of Six Countries Programme will be closely connected to the previous events of "6CP" and will use their results as its starting points. Under the title "Knowledge transfer in the information age" it is intended to form a "workshop of open questions", of new approaches, stimulating ideas and lively disputes. The multiple facets of the information age's new phenomena need new ways of thinking, open mind and free, unrestricted discussion. Therefore there will be room at the workshop for articulating divergent or provoking views and getting familiar with other participants' thoughts. Sufficient time should be given to workshop-type discussions following each presentation. The organizers expect 3-4 papers per each halfday session, which should stimulate interesting and profound debates.

The Workshop will concentrate on three key issues from among the diverse subjects related to knowledge transfer in the information age:

Topic 1. Information society and knowledge based economy: reality or mere catchwords?

Topic 2. The world of work in the information age.

Topic 3. Knowledge transfer in the economy.

In order to stimulate the exchange of ideas, the organizers of the Workshop formulate some questions to discuss:

• Does the information revolution revitalize the market economy or does the emerging information society use market forces for establishing itself?

• Does IT enlarge the scope of market and competition or does it strengthen the concentration of economic power?

• Does the rapid development of knowledge industry not lead to the depreciation of knowledge before it could produce adequate returns?

• Will the Gordian knot of unemployment finally be cut through by new kinds of employment (telework, labor-leasing etc.) that effectively eliminate the traditional way of employment?

• Is unemployment unmanageable because we wish to restore the working conditions of an earlier age with the new technology not permitting this?

• It seems that the gap between information rich and information poor people is widening, while knowledge, in contrast with material goods, cannot be redistributed by taxation and by social measures. Is there any solution? Or should we accept a definitive split of the society?

• What does the knowledge-absorbing ability of a company depend on?

• What is the relationship between the knowledge absorbing and the knowledge-creating capacities of industrial organization?

• How do the interorganizational, the intraorganizational and the individual learning link together?

8. Internationales Energie-Forum

Marktkonforme Durchsetzung erneuerbarer Energie

Bei weltweit wachsendem Energiebedarf sind erneuerbare Energien zum Schutz von Klima und Umwelt unverzichtbar. Sie haben in der Bevölkerung hohes positives Image und breite gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz. Ihr Wachstumspotential ist eindrucksvoll. Zwar ist ihr heutiger Anteil von wenigen Prozenten bescheiden, aber Zuwächse am Markt sind zweistellig. Noch sind die Kosten im Vergleich zu konventionellen Energien relativ hoch. Erneuerbare Energien werden sich letztlich nur durchsetzen können, wenn ihre Vorteile gegenüber fossilen Energien im Markt Berücksichtigung finden und sich in höheren Preisen niederschlagen können.

Ansätze für die Akzeptanz höherer Preise gibt es bereits. So sind Bürger bereit, für den Strom aus erneuerbaren Energien im Rahmen von grünen Tarifen höhere Preise zu zahlen. Im Interesse des Ansehens bei ihren Kunden und in der Öffentlichkeit engagieren sich Unternehmen, Anlagen erneuerbarer Energien in Deutschland oder auch in den Entwicklungsländern zu errichten, wenn die Mehrkosten als Beitrag zum Klimaschutz Anerkennung finden. Verschiedene Fördermaßnahmen und gesetzliche Regelungen bestimmen den Markt mit. Es gibt Ansätze, die politischen Rahmenbedingungen zu mehr Wettbewerb weiterzuentwickeln, etwa durch die Erbringung einer Mindestquote erneuerbarer Energien. Die Diskussion um handelbare Zertifikate für erneuerbare Energien hat begonnen.

Das 8. Internationale Energie-Forum bietet eine exzellente Gelegenheit, sich über die Ansätze und Möglichkeiten marktkonformer Durchsetzung erneuerbarer Energien zu informieren, aus den Erfahrungen anderer zu lernen und die verschiedenen Vorschläge zur Ausgestaltung eines Marktes erneuerbarer Energien im Wettbewerb zu diskutieren. Anerkannte Experten aus Energiewirtschaft, Wirtschaftswissenschaft und Politik werden vortragen und sich der Diskussion stellen. Graz, Austria, 25 - 26 November 1998

A conference on innovation in urban transport will be held in Graz, Austria, on 25 and 26 November 1998. The event is organised by the European Commission, DG VII, in cooperation with the Austrian Ministry of Transport, the Province of Styria and the City of Graz.

Discussions during the conference will focus on research results from EU-sponsored projects in the transport field. Issues such as mobility behaviour and management, new vehicle and propulsion concepts, innovative urban freight-traffic systems and solution-oriented telematics applications will also be discussed. Participants will be offered the opportunity to gain a closer insight into EU transport policy activities, as well as to discuss key themes within the EU's upcoming Fifth RTD Framework Programme.

An exhibition will be organised in parallel with the conference providing information on results of European research projects as well as on those planned for the future. One of the highlights of the conference will be a presentation, by Transport Commissioner Neil Kinnock, of the European Local Transport Information System (ELTIS), a project designed to provide facts and details on local and regional transport in Europe and support the transfer of knowledge and the exchange of experience in the field.

Informationsvorsprünge sind zu einem entscheidenden Wettbewerbsfaktor geworden. Leider verhalten sich besonders kleinere Unternehmen gegenüber neuen Informations- und Kommunikationstechniken zurückhaltend. Um hier einen Überblick zu geben, veranstalten wir das 9. Symposium. Es werden zwei Themenschwerpunkte gelegt.

1. Der elektronische Geschäftsverkehr

   Hier wird zunächst eine grundsätzliche Einführungzum Thema gegeben. Anschließend werden Fragen nach staatlicher Förderung, rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen und Zukunftsperspektiven beantwortet. Besonders im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage nach dem Nutzen dieser neuen Technologie für den mittelständischen Unternehmer. Herausgegriffen wird der Themenkomplex Marketing im Internet, welcher für KMU zunehmend an Praxisbedeutung gewinnt. Ein Referent von der IntershopAG wird an Praxisbeispielen, die Möglichkeiten des elektronischen Geschäftsverkehrs live im Internet demonstrieren.

2. Einsatz von IT in KMU (kleinere und mittlere Unternehmen)

   Aus wissenschaftlicher Seite wird hier ein Ausblick über die grundsätzlichen Möglichkeiten der IT gegeben. Anschließend wird ein Referent von der SAP AG berichten, der auch hier praktische Nutzungsmöglichkeiten aufzeigt.

Aufgrund der Raumbegrenzung wird gebeten, sich bis zum 20.11.1998 anzumelden.

Es werden zu dieser Fachtagung Unternehmensleiter kleiner und mittlerer Unternehmen sowie Vertreter von Kammern und Verbänden erwartet. Ihnen soll neben dem Programmangebot auch die Möglichkeit gegeben werden, mit Unternehmen und Referenten aus dem ganzen Bundesgebiet ins Gespräch zu kommen und interessante und gewinnbringende Kontakte zu knüpfen.

"Interactive multimedia beyond the year 2000" is a major conference which will take place in Vienna, Austria, on 29 November 1998. Organised by the European Commission within the framework of the INFO2000 programme for the development of the multimedia content industry and the use of multimedia content in Europe, the event aims to raise awareness of multimedia at the highest levels in Europe.

The first objective of the event is to present the results of the INFO2000 programme, showing the contribution made by the EU to ongoing and recently completed multimedia content initiatives. The second objective is to look forward to the development of multimedia content. This section of the programme will start with the presentation of a recent study, "Content and commerce driven strategies in global networks", carried out on behalf of the Commission. Here participants will look at the challenges and the business opportunities from the development of the Information Society and the transition to the "knowledge society".

The INFO2000 conference will be followed by the Gala where the EuroPrix MultiMediaArt '98 prizes will be presented. A total of 557 entries have been submitted for this new prize which aims to encourage creativity in the design and application of multimedia. On the days following the conference, IST 98, the EU's flagship conference in the information technologies sector will take place in Vienna, from 30 November until 2 December 1998. The European IT Prizes will also be presented during IST 98, on 1 December, by the Austrian Chancellor.

A series of events organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to be held in November 1998 will discuss the latest technology and policy developments in the field of nuclear power generation and related issues. These events are targeted at persons working in the management of nuclear utilities, reactor design organisations, hardware manufacturing companies and policy makers.

The symposia are as follows:

• International symposium on techniques for high-dose dosimetry in industry, agriculture and medicine, to be held in Vienna, Austria,from 2 to 5 November 1998. The symposium will cover the whole spectrum of research development and use of dosimetry in diverse radiation applications;

• International symposium on storage of spent fuel from power reactors to be held in Vienna, Austria, from 9 to 13 November 1998. This will provide a forum for exchanging information on the state-of-the-art and prospects for spent fuel storage with emphasis on the safety, engineering and environmental aspects;

• International symposium on evolutionary water cooled reactors to be held in Seoul, South Korea, from 30 November to 4 December 1998. The focus of the event will be on strategic issues, technologies and the economic viability of water-cooled reactors and their readiness to meet the short and medium-term needs for nuclear power throughout the world.

The working language of the symposia will be English.

The Fifth International Conference of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), addressing "Law in the Information Society", will be held in Florence, Italy, from 2 to 5 December 1998.

The purpose of the conference is to define as far as possible, a uniform framework for the application of computer technologies in a legal context. The European Commission, DG XI, will organize a workshop on Integrated Product Policy (IPP), to be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 8 December 1998. IPP is a relatively new area of environmental policy and aims to address the whole lifecycle of a product and the related environmental impact. The aim of the workshop is to provide a forum for interested parties to discuss key aspects of the formulation and implementation of a successful Integrated Product Policy.

A recent report on IPP, commissioned by DG XI, will serve as a background document to the workshop. This report examined the range of issues related to IPP, developed a framework for future developments at European level, and provided an overview of recent developments at Member State level.

The workshop aims to examine issues raised in the report further, and will cover the following:

• IPP: What priorities at EU level?
• Complementary of IPP at national and European level;
• IPP: implications for competitiveness and international trade;
• IPP in relation to other environmental policies;
• IPP and the expectations of, and challenges for, consumers and NGOs;
• IPP and how industry, SMEs and retailers can contribute.

Electronic Media and Citizenship in the Information Society

Finland, 6 - 9 January 1999

The second international congress on electronic media and citizenship in the Information Society will be held in various venues in Finland from 6 to 9 January 1999. The congress will be organised by the Finnish National Fund for Research and Development (SITRA) on the initiative of the Finnish Parliament's Committee for the Future.

The theme this year will be "Electronic media and citizenship in the Information Society" and discussions will centre around three main themes:

• Politics in transition and the future of the public sector;
• New citizenship and democracy in the Information Society;
• Enhancing the central role of the citizen by developing new services and technologies.

The congress will be composed of a series of plenary sessions to be held in Espoo, Finland, on 7 and 8 January 1999 and a series of separate congresses to be held in various venues throughout Finland on 9 January 1999. These are as follows:

• Virtualisation of citizenship and entrepreneurship, to be held in Jyväskylä;
• Services and people's mobility in the Information Society with particular emphasis on older people and the disabled, to be held in Oulu;
• Local partnership for prosperity and welfare, to be held in Tampere.

In unserer Gesellschaft werden Informationen für alle Phasen des Lebens gebraucht, zum Lernen, Lehren, Arbeiten und Forschen. Die dabei entwickelte Kreativität wird zur Grundlage der heute globalen Kommunikation mit anderen Menschen. Im Zeitalter der Informationsgesellschaft bildet dieses Gut zusammen mit der technischen Verfügbarkeit eine Art Grundversorgung. Doch der gesellschaftliche Umgang mit dem immer Mehr an bereitgestelltem "Wissen" sowie den Möglichkeiten und Risiken der sich immer rascher entwickelnden Informationstechnik muß dabei ebenso vermittelt, ja beherrschbar gemacht werden. Damit stellt sich für den Übergang von einer Informations- zu einer Wissensgesellschaft die Frage nach der Strukturierung und Bearbeitung der Informationen sowie der konzeptionellen Aufgaben- und Anwendungsorientierung.

Der 2. Workshop im Rahmen des Projektes "Technikfolgenbeurteilung und Wissenschaftsethik in Ländern Mittel- und Osteuropas" der Europäischen Akademie zum Thema "Von der Informations- zur Wissensgesellschaft" soll in einem Feld, welches gegenwärtig im Umbruch ist, einige Schlaglichter auf wichtige Entwicklungslinien der Triade "Demokratie - Partizipation - Technikfolgenbeurteilung" werfen.

Wie schon beim ersten Workshop werden Persönlichkeiten aus osteuropäischen und westeuropäischen Ländern zu der interdisziplinären Veranstaltung eingeladen.

Der Workshop wird vom 3. bis 5. Februar 1999 im Hauptgebäude der Akademie der Wissenschaften der Tschechischen Republik, Prag stattfinden und in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Zentrum für Wissenschafts-, Technik- und Gesellschaftsstudien beim Institut für Philosophie der Akademie der Wissenschaften der Tschechischen Republik durchgeführt.

Eine Einladung mit detailliertem Programm wird im Oktober erfolgen.

"POSTING" - Praxisorientiertes Studium Informatik und Gesellschaft

Tübingen, 22. - 24. Februar 1999

Die Lehre des Fachgebietes Informatik und Gesellschaft ist aufgrund von Studienreformen, neuen Lehrformen und Veröffentlichungen mit Lehrbuchcharakter sehr vielfältig geworden. Wir wollen ein Forum bieten, um über die Vermittlungsmöglichkeiten in der Lehre zu diskutieren. Wir wollen von den Erfahrungen ausgehen, welche wir an den Universitäten Tübingen und Oldenburg gemeinsam mit dem Deutschen Institut für Fernstudienforschung (DIFF) in dem Projekt "Fernstudium Informatik und Gesellschaft" gesammelt haben. Die Tagung wendet sich an AutorInnen der im Projekt entstandenen Studienbriefe, FachgebietsvertreterInnen, PraktikerInnen der beruflichen Weiterbildung, Sozial- und GeisteswissenschaftlerInnen sowie DidaktikerInnen.

Für die Veranstaltung wird die Diskussion der folgenden Fragen vorgeschlagen:

• Welche (ethischen, bildungspolitischen, aufklärerischen) Anliegen hat "Informatik und Gesellschaft" neben der Vermittlung spezifischer Inhalte? Wie lassen sich diese Anliegen in der Lehre verwirklichen?
• Welches Curriculum braucht das Fachgebiet? Wie ist es am besten vermittelbar?
• In welchem Verhältnis stehen Anspruch und Wirklichkeit der Lehre zueinander?
• Welche Einstellungen, Erwartungen und Vorbehalte bringen die AdressatInnen mit?
• Wie sind virtuelle Lehrformen im Vergleich zu anderen sozialen Lehrformen zu bewerten?
• Wie ist Interdisziplinarität zu erreichen?
• Welche Möglichkeiten hat "Informatik und Gesellschaft" im Bereich betrieblicher bzw. beruflicher Fort- und Weiterbildung?

Es sollen aber auch gezielt die Wünsche der TeilnehmerInnen berücksichtigt werden. Wir bitten Sie deshalb, uns so bald wie möglich eine unverbindliche Nachricht zu senden, ob Sie Interesse an einer Teilnahme haben. Gleichzeitig freuen wir uns auf zahlreiche Vorschläge, damit wir mit unseren Planungen auf Ihre Bedürfnisse eingehen können.

Eine verbindliche Anmeldung ist damit noch nicht verbunden. Sie können uns jedoch mitteilen, ob Sie an weiteren Informationen zu dieser Tagung interessiert sind.

Open Science Meeting on
Industrial Transformation

Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 25 - 26 February 1999

The Open Science Meeting on Industrial Transformation (IT) aims at discussing the Draft Science Plan as well as discussing and developing a number of potential IT research projects. The meeting will bring together the wider scientific community, the private sector and research funding agencies. It is intended for a wide audience of researchers such as economists, political scientists, econometricians, sociologists and psychologists involved in research on production and consumption systems, including the industrial ecology community, the marketing communities, the private sector (strategic environmental management, product development) and research funding agencies.

Plenary and parallel sessions are planned for both days. During the meeting the whole concept of Industrial Transformation as well as the identified research projects will be discussed. Only a limited number of papers can be accepted. The number of participants is limited to 200.

IT research: The overall goal of research on Industrial Transformation is to understand the societal mechanisms and human driving forces that could enable a transformation of the industrial development towards sustainability, and in physical terms to decouple consumption and production, commonly denoted as industrial activities, from their environmental impacts. Industrial Transformation studies the interactions between physical, technical, economic, social and cultural aspects of industrial activities in relation to the natural environment. It involves the analysis of production and consumption patterns (over space and time) and their corresponding modes of organisation, technologies, material and energy transformations, environmental impacts, and the consequences of these impacts for the quality of life.

The added value of research in this area is its integrative and multidisciplinary character: Industrial Transformation research focuses on the dynamic interactions and mutual dependencies between the socio-economic, the technological/producer and the consumer domain, which have, so far, been studied in isolation.

Within Industrial Transformation three related fields of research can be distinguished:

1. Macro-systems and the incentive structure, concerning the institutional and financial as well as the physical setting of the economic system.
2. The production system, including the physical/technological as well as the institutional/organisational aspects of production at the firm level, such as Life Cycle Analysis, Integrated Chain Management, Eco-Efficiency and Industrial Symbiosis.
3. The consumption system, focusing on the role of consumers in decision making processes, the development of needs/preferences/life-styles in relation to social trends, relations between per capita income and environmental resource use.

The Scientific Planning Committee has proposed to narrow the research field by developing a research framework based on the identification of a limited number of priority research projects. Each of these will encompass all three fields of research and will focus on key societal needs or activities, for example Drinking Water Production, Food Production and Consumption, Transport, Material Processing and Use, and Energy Productions and Consumption. The Committee is working to identify a number of regional and global research projects that fit within this overall research framework.

Umwelteinflüsse erfassen, simulieren, bewerten

Pfinztal bei Karlsruhe, 10.-12. März 1999

Sowohl technische Erzeugnisse als auch lebende Systeme unterliegen während ihrer gesamten Lebens- und Nutzungsdauer einer Vielzahl von Einflüssen aus ihrer Umgebung. Diese beeinflussen Leistungsfähigkeit und Lebensdauer der Objekte und damit auch deren Rückwirkung auf die Umwelt.

Mit Methoden der Umweltsimulation werden Wechselwirkungen zwischen einem Objekt und seiner Umwelt untersucht. Auf der Basis einer ganzheitlichen Betrachtung werden die in der Regel komplex vernetzten Wirkungsketten modellhaft strukturiert und Kausalzusammenhänge analysiert.

Umweltsimulations-Untersuchungen befassen sich dabei mit den Auswirkungen der Umwelt auf

• Leistungsfähigkeit und Funktionsverhalten,
• Langzeitverhalten bzw. Lebensdauer,
• Rückwirkung auf die Umwelt.

Ziel der Umweltsimulation ist die Aufdeckung von Ursache-Wirkungs-Zusammenhängen, die Qualifikation von Erzeugnissen für gegebene Umweltbedingungen und die Optimierung einer umweltbezogenen Produktentwicklung. Bei Alterungs- und Verwitterungsprozessen und bei Zuverlässigkeitsstudien spielen Fragen der Zeitraffung und der künstlichen Alterung eine große Rolle.

Umweltsimulations-Untersuchungen finden auch Eingang in das Life-cycle-engineering, das ressourcenschonende Materialmanagement und die Entwicklung nachhaltiger Produkte.

Die Jahrestagungen der GUS befassen sich mit allen Fragen der Umweltsimulation. Sie sind insbesondere auf den interdisziplinären Charakter der Umweltsimulation ausgerichtet und werden entsprechend strukturiert.

Die Vorträge werden sich mit folgenden Themen und damit zusammenhängenden Problemfeldern befassen:

• Messen und Auswerten von Umwelteinflüssen
• Simulation der Umwelteinflüsse (Technik, Methodik, Programme, Zeitraffung)
• Beurteilung der Wirkungen von Umwelteinflüssen, insbesondere auf Werkstoffe und technische Erzeugnisse (Ermüdung, Alterung, Zuverlässigkeit, Qualität, Funktionsverhalten)
• Berücksichtigung der Umwelteinflüsse bei der Auslegung bzw. Konstruktion technischer Systeme und Produkte
• Rückwirkung auf die Umwelt, Ressourcenschonung, Nachhaltigkeit
• Wirtschaftlichkeits-Untersuchungen und Management in der Umweltsimulation.

Die Beiträge werden in einem Tagungsband veröffentlicht, der zu Konferenzbeginn vorgelegt wird.

Industrial Crops and Products

Bonn, 23 - 25 March 1999

The fourth European symposium on industrial crops and products, to be held in conjunction with the sixth symposium on renewable resources for the chemical industry, will be held in Bonn, Germany, from 23 to 25 March 1999.

The symposium will address several aspects of research and development for industrial crops and products. These will include agronomy, breeding, policy and economics, industrial processing and utilization, and environmental impact. The symposium will focus on existing and new potential industrial crops, such as oil and fibre crops, and crops for the production of carbohydrates or proteins. Crops producing other special compounds for industrial applications will also be discussed.

Abstracts of papers for presentation during the symposium are invited - in the fields of oils, carbohydrates, fibres, and proteins for industrial markets - on the following topics:

• Policy, economics and markets, including production chains;
• Primary production, including cultivation and breeding;
• Processing of crops to industrial raw materials;
• Non-food products based on renewable resources, such as biopolymers, surfactants, biofuels, etc.;
• Renewable resource-based products with biological activities, such as pharmaceutics, biocides, etc.;
• Microbial conversion of renewable resources to added value non-food products;
• Structure-function, relationships in non-food use of agro-materials.

Biogenic Emissions of Greenhouse Gases Caused by Arable and Animal Agriculture

Stuttgart, Germany 13. - 15. Oktober 1999

Background

New commitments to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases beyond the year 2000 were agreed upon in Kyoto in December 1997, under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC).

Among the gases of concern methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) have a main source in agriculture. Additionally, agricultural land can be a source of CO₂ (farmed organic soils) or a sink when converted to forest. Furthermore, reactive gases like nitric oxide (NO) and ammonia (NH₃) should be included in the discussion of the greenhouse effect due to their interference with local climate and their indirect effects on global climate.

In this context it is important to analyze and define which role agriculture can and should play to reach the reduction goal for greenhouse gas emissions in industrialized countries.

Scope

Against the background of the Kyoto Protocol the aim of this conference is to assess the latest achievements about the biogenic sources and sinks of N₂O, NO, NH₃, CH₄ and CO₂ in animal and arable agriculture. This includes fundamental research on process level, progress in measurement technologies and in the definition of emission factors, modelling of emissions on farm, regional and continental level, mitigation options from the environmental and the socio-economic perspective as well as possibilities for the implementation of abatement strategies.

Target Audience

This conference addresses scientists, economists and politicians and other persons from public and private institutions, administrations and governments working in the field of 'greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture' with regard to emergence, measurement, inventories as well as mitigation measures and strategies for biogenic greenhouse gases.

Call for Poster Papers

People planning to present a poster are asked to submit a one-page abstract for consideration by the Programme Committee. Accepted poster papers will be published in the Book of Abstracts, which will be distributed to conference participants. The abstracts are due March 31^st, 1999

Posters with a broad scope will be considered for publication along with the presentations of the keynote speakers in a special issue of Nutrient Cycling in Agroecosystems. Papers will be reviewed by the Programme Committee and by an external reviewer.
