News from ITAS In the framework of the new Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, ITAS has organised a Round Table on "Radio Diversity", addressing technology competition for use of the radio spectrum, and the flexibilisation of regulation which would be needed. [23.11.2009] |
The Round Table has been supported with funds from the German Excellence Initiative. 19 representatives of industry, research organisations and regulators from several European countries, the US and Japan discussed new network technologies and new forms of spectrum regulation with a view of the potential benefits of the new approaches. Currently, next to UMTS/LTE, alternative technologies are emerging, such as Wimax and iBurst. If the Europe-wide use of such technologies were eased by regulation, network operators could more easily select what technology to use. Technologies could then be chosen which, e.g., are better suited for the wireless provision of Internet access, or which have lower need for energy.
Furthermore, new US approaches for operating wireless systems through NGOs or by the users themselves were discussed.
Participants proposed to have follow-up events and projects working out the alternatives with their strengths and weaknesses in some detail, and to make the options broadly known.
