In the debate on technological innovations, emerging technological opportunities e.g. in biotechnology, nanotechnology or information and communication technology (ICT), are promoted as a key for achieving global sustainability. At the same time there is a growing body of evidence that evolving technologies do not automatically contribute to a sustainable development. Governing technology development for global sustainability therefore needs reliable technology assessment methods to provide an overview and raise awareness for the direct and longterm implications of technology development.
Starting out with examples on how international organisations aim at promoting more sustainable technological development, the presentation highlights the importance of an indicator set at the sectoral level. As the sectoral approach provides the opportunity to engage corporate actors in voluntary activities on corporate social responsibility, it is a crucial basis to monitor and govern a global change towards sustainability.
A participatory approach to develop sectoral sustainability indicator sets and experiences from applying this approach in practical projects will be presented. Three exemplary case studies are introduced, covering
Conclusions will be drawn on improved governance of new technologies towards a more sustainable development.
